🌰Sesame
What it is
Sesame is one of the 14 EU-regulated allergens, and reactions to it can be severe. It's an increasingly recognised allergy, especially where sesame-based foods (tahini, hummus) are common.
Where it hides
Beyond sesame seeds and tahini, sesame turns up in bread and burger buns, hummus, falafel, some spice blends (za’atar), and processed snacks.
Safety note
EU law requires sesame to be declared on packaged food labels whenever it's used as an ingredient, even in small amounts.
