  1. 1Rinse masoor dal thoroughly and cook with 3 cups of water and half a teaspoon of turmeric powder in a pressure cooker for 2-3 whistles, or simmer in a pot until soft.
  2. 2Heat vegetable oil in a separate pan over medium heat, then add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  3. 3Add chopped onion and sauté until golden brown, then stir in minced garlic and grated ginger, cooking for another minute.
  4. 4Add chopped tomato and red chili powder, cooking until the tomato softens and the oil begins to separate.
  5. 5Pour the cooked dal into the pan with the tempering mixture, stirring well to combine, and simmer for 5 minutes.
